LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Officer Nikolas Wilt has shown signs of improvement, though he is still listed as critical but stable condition.

The Louisville Metro Police Department shared an update that Wilt’s lung condition has shown signs of improvement after spending a week and a half at Jewish Hospital. LMPD said the 26-year-old officer has not had to have help of an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, a device that pumps blood throughout the body, for over 48 hours.

Wilt has been transferred back to UofL Hospital for monitoring by the trauma team in the Intensive Care Unit there.

“Although he’s doing better, he is still working on responding to commands,” police said. Police also reported his battle with pneumonia has become more manageable, and that he has been off a ventilator for the past 24 hours.

The Louisville police officer was part of the police team responding to reports of a shooting at the Old National Bank on Monday, April 10. As police exchanged gunfire, Wilt was struck in the head and went down before the shooter was killed by police. He was rushed to UofL Hospital where he underwent brain surgery and remained in their care until he was moved to Jewish Hospital.
