WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Grocery store chain Hy-Vee announced Tuesday it plans to bring its brand to Kentucky and is opening its first store in Louisville.

Hy-Vee has 12 acres at the SouthPointe Commons site just off of Bardstown Road and the Gene Snyder Freeway. The company has submitted its initial plans to Metro Louisville. It calls for an approximately 150,000-square-foot store with tentative plans to open in 2023.

In a statement, chairman and CEO of Hy-Vee, Rany Edeker said, “As Hy-Vee continues to grow and evolve, we have so much to offer consumers across the U.S. that we knew it was time to expand our footprint even further.” He added, “As customers’ shopping habits change and their needs evolve, we have services and offerings that we believe will bring an entirely new retail experience to those in Kentucky.”

The company is based out of Iowa and the Kentucky store will be one of its first in the southeast. Recently, Hy-Vee announced it would bring stores to Indiana, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky.

Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small store in Beaconsfield, Iowa, in 1930. It is an employee-owned store and, according to its website, Hy-Vee has over 93,000 employees, 285 stores and is currently in eight states. Hy-Vee ranks among the top 25 supermarket chains and the top 50 private companies in the United States. with sales of $12 billion annually.
