LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After a year of adjustments, changes and cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the signature kick-off event for the Kentucky Derby Festival returned this weekend.

What You Need To Know

  • Derby Festival kicked off Saturday with the 2021 Pegasus Parade

  • The parade traveled through the community this year

  • 35 neighborhoods around Louisville saw floats on their streets

The 2021 Pegasus Parade was in full effect Saturday despite the rain, and it was an experience like never before. Instead of the typical march down Broadway, this year the modified parade took a tour through several Louisville neighborhoods.

Over the course of two days, the 2021 parade would travel more than 60 miles through 35 neighborhoods around Louisville.

This year's theme is “A Tribute to the Community" and features inflatables, mascots and the 2021 royal court.

As part of this year's Pegasus Parade, organizers asked community members to participate by decorating their porches and homes in honor of the Derby Festival season.

“As we looked at 2021 and how to produce our events, we wanted to find a way we could bring it to the community knowing that we weren't able to all gather just yet. So with the parade we decided to gather around all four corners of the community, North, South, East, West and even over into Southern Indiana,” said Aimee Boyd, spokesperson for Kentucky Derby Festival.

The Pegasus Parade will continue Sunday starting at 1 p.m. The full schedule and route for the parade can be found here.
