LOS ANGELES – The Getty 745-acre Getty fire was likely caused by a tree branch that broke off during high wind conditions and subsequently crashed into nearby power lines, resulting in nearby brush being ignited, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

All of the mandatory and voluntary evacuations have now been lifted as of Friday morning.

The LAFD public information officer tweeted dash cam video that appeared to show the spark believed to have ignited the fire.

The cause of the fire has been ruled as accidental and the branch is believed to have come from a Eucalyptus tree in the 1900 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard.

"This was, simply put, an act of God," Mayor Garcetti said during an afternoon news briefing.

Thousands of people were unable to return to their homes after mandatory evacuations were issued due to the Getty fire. As of Friday, the fire is 39 percent contained.

The fire ignited at 1:34 a.m. on Monday on the 405 Freeway at Sepulveda Boulevard quickly spreading to hundreds of acers. A total of 1,165 have joined the fire crew fighting the flames. The fire has destroyed 12 structures and damaged five homes.

No injuries related to the fire have been reported.

Some evacuation orders have been lifted, allowing residents to return home. However, firefighters warn that they should be ready to swiftly leave if the fire gets out of control.

Fire crews are actively working to protect the 10,000 structures throughout the evacuation zone.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Garcetti said an extreme wind event is expected around 11 p.m. Tuesday night with gusts as strong as 70 mph. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas, β€œit only takes one ember to travel downwind to start a fire.”

Garcetti said β€œthere will be people displaced for a couple of weeks.”

Mayor Garcetti tweeted on Monday that he is signing an emergency declaration immediately to bring in more resources to fight the Getty Fire. Additionally, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a statewide emergency to obtain a Fire Management Assistant Grant.
