As March comes to a close, many Wisconsinites have high hopes April will bring more pleasant weather, but both rain and snow are common throughout the month.

What You Need To Know

  • Most of Wisconsin receives more than 3 inches of rain in April

  • Average April snowfall ranges from about 2 to 6 inches

  • June is typically the wettest month across the state

The saying, "April showers bring May flowers," holds true for many locations across the United States, but Wisconsin can still see snow throughout the month. Our average April snowfall ranges from just over 2 inches in Milwaukee to upwards of 6 inches around Wausau in northern Wisconsin.

Periods of rain are also common in April around the state as we start our slow transition from winter to more spring-like weather.

Most cities pick up between 3 and 4 inches of rainfall throughout the month.

Milwaukee is the prime spot for April rainfall, averaging 3.86 inches during the month.

Although our average rainfall is higher in April than many other months out of the year, our wettest month in most locations around the state is June. Average rainfall in June tops 4 inches in many cities.

However, in La Crosse and Rhinelander, July tends to be the wettest month, most likely becuase of thunderstorms.

If this past March has taught us anything, we need to be prepared for all types of weather in Wisconsin for April.

Rain and snow are both likely possibilities, along with stretches of bitter cold and welcome warmth.

It's the month of the "full closet" where we will need everything from our snow boots to rain coats and sweaters to t-shirts!
