We are officially a few weeks into fall in Wisconsin, but will our pleasant temperatures and calm weather pattern continue for the rest of the season?
Our fall season has started off on a relatively quiet note and over the weeks ahead, we can likely expect that to continue.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC), we should expect temperatures in October to be slightly above average. During the month, most cities around Wisconsin see their average high temperatures drop from the 60s into the lower 50s. Given the newest outlook from the CPC, we will probably see temperatures running just slightly higher than usual.
Looking ahead to the next three months, temperatures across the eastern half of Wisconsin may remain slightly above normal. The western and northwestern parts of the state will see temperatures fairly close to average through December.
Conditions favor a drier-than-normal pattern setting up across Wisconsin for October. While several storm systems will cross the state at various times throughout the month, we should see rainfall totals end up lower than average.
Looking ahead to the next three months, it appears that we have equal chances of above or below-average precipitation for the state. Many places typically see their first snowflakes during the fall and more powerful cold fronts often cross the state as we transition from a mild to much colder pattern.
Temperature swings can be common during the fall and we should always expect the possibility of sharp changes in temperature, but overall, we should end up with temperatures a little warmer than what is typical for the fall season.
Rain and even snow will occur during multiple events over the next three months, but the amount of measurable precipitation we see should end up close to average.
