The first week of October tends to feature some gorgeous fall color across the state. While some areas are experiencing a burst of red and yellow hues, many other parts of the state are lacking.

What You Need To Know

  • Many counties in northern Wisconsin are seeing their peak fall color this week

  • Some drought-stricken areas are seeing some colors pop earlier than usual

  • Many parts of southern Wisconsin are still only seeing patchy color

I'm a firm believer that there are few places in the United States more beautiful than Wisconsin in the fall. From the Northwoods to Door County, the reds, yellows and oranges that we've grown to love are finally making an appearance.

Fall color report

Peak fall color is arriving in northern Wisconsin, right on schedule. The northern half of the state typically reaches its peak fall color during the first and second week in October. As you can see on the map below, that's exactly what we are seeing right now.

For much of southern Wisconsin, our most vibrant fall colors don't typically show up until around the third week of October. While we are currently seeing little color on the trees, things will quickly change in the coming weeks.

Current drought conditions

One interesting thing to note is the patchy color starting to appear in southern Wisconsin in places like Kenosha and Racine Counties. This coincides with the areas that have been plagued by drought conditions over the last several months. The drought is causing colors to pop a bit earlier in these counties and may lead to duller colors, like more yellows and browns.

Instead of reaching peak fall color toward the end of October, many areas will see their leaves changing much more quickly this year.

If you plan to try to snap any photos, early in October is your best chance, especially in northern Wisconsin. Because of the lingering drought conditions farther south, colors may not be as vivid in many places this year.
