MADISON, Wis (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- A UW Health doctor creates a new non profit foundation — called the Global Pediatric MDS Initiative-- to  support patients of a rare but oftentimes deadly bone marrow disease.

Pediatric Cancer Oncologist Dr. Inga Hoffman has treated dozens of children through the years at various hospitals for the condition, known as MDS.

"Which stands for Myelodysplastic Syndrome, when the bone marrow doesn’t produce enough healthy blood cells," Dr Hoffman said.

Because MDS is rare, the doctor says it doesn’t get the research dollars it deserves.

"There is a life, there is a child, there is a kid on the line that is not making it because we are not advancing it fast enough," she said.

Dr. Hoffman currently working on a family and patient friendly website.  She is also bringing medical leaders together to work on the effort. You can learn more on the foundation's Facebook page.
