WISCONSIN — More than 150 pets from the Southeast are being transported to Wisconsin to find fur-ever homes in the aftermath of Hurricanes Milton and Helene.
The rescue pets will embark on an emergency airlift via a charter flight donated by Southwest Airlines on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The following Wisconsin shelters will take in displaced animals:
- The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS)
- Elmbrook Humane Society
- Washington County Humane Society
- Humane Society of Jefferson County
- Dane County Humane Society
- Green County Humane Society
- Eau Claire Community Humane Association
HAWS said it plans to take in about 40 of the animals at its Waukesha shelter.
Animals will receive veterinary care and any needed follow up care. Some could be available for adoption as early as Monday, Oct. 14.
These animals — including dogs, puppies, cats and kittens — were in the care of shelters in Tennessee and Florida before the two hurricanes tore through the region. In an effort to ensure these pets stay safe — and make room for animals displaced by Hurricanes Milton and Helene — these animals were transferred to a rescue campus and transport hub in South Carolina.
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue’s South Carolina Rescue Campus in Florence, S.C., is playing a big part in helping animals impacted by the hurricanes, but it also helps animals every day, as pet overpopulation exceeds adoption demand in the south. Because of the airlift, Lucky Dog will be able to take in more injured and displaced animals in need in the wake of the hurricanes, too.
Now, the pets will travel to the Midwest to find families.
Earlier this month, a handful of Wisconsin shelters took in 132 rescue pets who were displaced by Hurricane Helene. Many of those rescue animals have already found safe, loving fur-ever homes here in the Badger State.
