WISCONSIN — More than 100 pets from South Carolina are being transported to Wisconsin to find fur-ever homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

The shelter pets are being flown from Florence, South Carolina to Waukesha, Wis., on Wednesday morning by Ameriflight, with the support of Greater Good Charities, the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) and other Wisconsin shelter partners.

The animals were already in shelters in South Carolina before the hurricane started. Transporting the pets to Wisconsin will create room in local South Carolina shelters to take in displaced pets from the storm and even support other overcrowded animal shelters impacted by the hurricane, such as ones in Florida. There is expected to be an influx of pets in need throughout the southeastern region of the U.S. due to Hurricane Helene.

Animals are being sent from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and their affiliates, Florence Area Humane Society and Marion County Animal Shelter. The following Wisconsin shelters will take in the pets:

  • Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County (HAWS)
  • Humane Society of Jefferson County
  • Elmbrook Humane Society
  • Washington County Humane Society
  • Wisconsin Humane Society
  • Dane County Humane Society
  • Eau Claire Humane Association
  • Green County Humane Society

The pets coming to Wisconsin have all been fully vetted and health certified by a veterinarian. Once they arrive in their new home state, pets will be evaluated and receive any follow up care or medical care needed before they are available for adoption. Most, if not all, adoptable animals will be made available in the coming days.
