GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers play their home opener Sunday at Noon at Lambeau Field against the Colts.
The Packers had only seven interceptions all of last season, but free agent arrival Xavier McKinney got one in the first quarter of his first game. The safety told me it’s just the beginning.
“I think this year you’ll see a lot of that,” said McKinney. “I’ll be able to get really good reads on these quarterbacks, and it’s going to be fun.”
McKinney and the Packers’ defense will be going up against Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson on Sunday. Richardson can throw it or run it.
“Obviously, he can throw the ball. I’m pretty sure 100 yards on one leg,” joked McKinney. “He’s a guy that can improvise. He’s mobile. He can make things work with his feet.”
“You saw it last week when Richardson threw the ball 60 some odd yards in the air,” said Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur. “So, this is a very explosive offense. It’s a great challenge. When you’re playing a quarterback as athletic as Richardson is, he’s going to stretch you in a lot of different ways.”
Former Badgers running back Jonathan Taylor is one of the big offensive threats for the Colts.
“He’s a really great back in this league,” said McKinney. “He’s a guy that can make people miss down the field. And, he has great vision. So, we’re going to have to do a great job with just getting 11 hats to the ball every time. And it’s going to take more than one person to be able to get him down.”
“I think it’s going to be a great challenge,” said LaFleur. “I think you look at Jonathan Taylor. It’s very similar in a lot of ways in terms to what Philly was able to do.”
McKinney says there’s no extra burden on the defense, no matter who’s at quarterback for the Packers. It’s just about meeting their standard.
