WISCONSIN — As summer draws to a close, so does summer break. Students across Wisconsin will soon head back to class.
We rounded up first day of school details for the Badger State’s 10 largest school districts:
1. Milwaukee
All Milwaukee Public Schools students will head back to class on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
MPS previously used two school calendars, meaning some students were on different schedules depending on what school they attend. The “early start” calendar launched in 2016.
This year, everyone will utilize a single, district-wide calendar, available here.
2. Madison
Madison Metropolitan School District students in 4K, Kindergarten, 6th grade, 9th grade and enrolled in the Early Childhood program, will all start school on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
All other MMSD students head back to class on Wednesday, Sept. 4. View MMSD’s calendar, here.
3. Kenosha
The first day of school for most students enrolled in the Kenosha Unified School District will be Tuesday, Sept. 3. However, KUSD students who attend Frank Elementary start the school year on Aug. 15.

4. Racine
Students in grades K-12 who attended school through the Racine Unified School District will start classes on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Students enrolled in 5K will have staggered start days listed in their families’ welcome back letters.

5. Green Bay
Students who attend a Green Bay Area Public School District school do not all start on the same day.
Monday, Aug. 26 is the first day of school for 4K, K-5, 6th graders and 9th graders. Additionally, all K-8 students enrolled at Aldo, da Vinci and Red Smith will start Aug. 26 in person. Those students will attend in person.
Monday, Aug. 26 is the first day of school for 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders, but they will attend asynchronous instruction.
Wednesday, Aug. 28 is the first day of school for students enrolled in full-day Head Start. Wednesday, Sept. 4 is the first day of school for students enrolled in half-day Head Start.

6. Appleton
Appleton Area School District kicks off the 2024-25 school year on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The School District of Waukesha kicks off the 2024-25 school year on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Students in the Eau Claire Area School District start school on Tuesday, Sept. 3 this year.

9. Janesville
All 9th graders enrolled in the School District of Janesville will start school on Thursday, Aug. 29. All other students will start school on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
