MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Board of School Directors held a special meeting Monday. Members appointed a board clerk and interviewed three interim superintendent candidates for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).

  • The board appointed Tina Owen-Moore as the board clerk for the Office of Board Governance. The board clerk manages that office as well as serves as “an administrator, parliamentarian and records custodian” for the board

  • The board also said it interviewed its three final candidates for the interim superintendent position. The board said should it select a candidate for the position and if they accept the job, “their appointment will be formalized at a future board meeting”

  • The board said it plans to have an interim superintendent before the beginning of the 2024-25 school year

  • The board will then focus on a national search for a permanent superintendent

The board appointed Tina Owen-Moore as the board clerk for the Office of Board Governance. The board clerk manages that office as well as serves as “an administrator, parliamentarian and records custodian” for the board.

Owen-Moore was previously the superintendent for the School District of Cudahy from July 2020 to July 2024. She also held a leadership position at the Chicago International Charter School and established and led the Alliance School of Milwaukee, an MPS charter school.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Owen-Moore to MPS to lead the Office of Board Governance. I feel confident that her extensive knowledge as an administrator will help guide the Board’s activities moving forward,” said Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Marva Herndon.

Owen-Moore earned bachelor’s degrees in English and secondary education from Marquette University, a master’s degree in administrative leadership from Alverno College and a doctorate in education leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She also has a superintendent endorsement from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jill Kawala had been serving as the interim board clerk and will now return to her position as the assistant board clerk.

The board also said it interviewed its three final candidates for the interim superintendent position.
