GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers will hold their first practice of training camp on Monday.
What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, we weren’t quite sure how good the Packers were going to be. After their strong finish last season, the Packers (and their fans) go into this season with high hopes.
Here are three things to watch for in Packers training camp.
Who will be the Packers kicker this season?
Anders Carlson is the incumbent, but he missed a league-high 13 kicks as a rookie last season. A costly missed field goal in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers still stings.
The door is open for challengers Greg Joseph, the former Vikings kicker, and former Michigan kicker James Turner.
New kickoff rules
Speaking of kicking, the NFL's new kickoff rules will be an adjustment during the preseason.
Among the changes designed to encourage returns and lower concussion rates, kickers will continue to kick from the 35-yard line, but the other 10 players on the kickoff team will line up at the receiving team’s 40-yard line.
Rookie watch
Offensive lineman Jordan Morgan was the Packers’ first round pick. Will he start at tackle? Guard? Will he be a reserve this season? Several rookies, including second round choices linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and safety Javon Bullard, could challenge for starting spots, or playing time at the very least.
Family Night is Saturday, Aug. 3 at Lambeau Field. The Packers first preseason game is Saturday, Aug. 10 at Cleveland.
