Accompanied by a dear Marquette college buddy, Schmidt traced the divide from the Canadian to the Mexican border. He documented every twist and turn along the way in the hopes of simply making a home video.

“Yes, it’s a cycling film, but it’s really about finding midlife purpose,” said Schmidt, reflecting about his and his friend’s journey.

Their remarkable adventure culminated in the award-winning Lunar Door Productions documentary, “Tracing the Divide,” which recently made waves at the Milwaukee Film Festival.

“It was life-changing,” Schmidt said about the transformative impact of the ride.

“Their tenacity inspired all of us,” recalled Erika Moore, Mercyhealth Walworth surgical services supervisor.

She said the team went to Milwaukee for the viewing party.

As “Tracing the Divide” continues to captivate audiences, Schmidt said the production company is currently shopping the film around to several streaming sites.
