MILWAUKEE — A coffee shop called The Daily Bird signifies rising above addiction, while offering hope and a sense of community to others.

What You Need To Know

  • The Daily Bird coffee shop offers a sense of community

  • Located in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, it occupies the former space of Fuel Cafe

  • Owner Dan Zwart’s personal journey, including struggles with addiction and loss, inspired the creation of The Daily Bird

The business occupies the former Fuel Cafe space on Center Street in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood.

When you step inside, there’s a certain brightness and energy infused by the sound of coffee grinders.

“A chai?” owner Dan Zwart asked a customer. “I know their names, and I know their drinks before they walk into the door.”

Beyond the coffee counter, the walls are painted bright yellow and are filled with affirmations, positive statements and reminders that reflect Zwart’s own journey and his mission to spread positivity.

“I feel like a lot of people just need little reminders,” said Zwart. “I get emotional.”

Zwart’s path to create this peaceful oasis was riddled with personal struggles. He had a long, difficult battle with drugs and alcohol and lost close family members to the opioid epidemic.

“I was in a dark hole for a long time,” he said.

Now, six years sober, that pain fuels purpose. He said he finds healing through his passion to make coffee and connect with people.

The name, “Daily Bird,” is an ode to his two daughters, named Dayle and Birdie. He said they are his inspiration.

More than coffee, Zwart said he wants The Daily Bird to be about community. Everyone is welcome. Zwart said he tries to make sure everyone feels seen and heard.

“I try,” he said. “I am not a social worker. I’m not a therapist but my ears work, and I’ve been through a lot of crazy situations. If you’re struggling, holler at me. Slide into my DMs. Maybe go to a meeting. Get uncomfortable. What can I say to people? I love you and I hope life gets better.”

In turn, the Riverwest neighborhood has embraced The Daily Bird whole-heartedly. It’s just one shining yellow example of how one person, business and community can help move each other forward.
