MILWAUKEE — For brother and sister Marcia and Marc Taylor, what started as a small kernel of an idea while growing up in Michigan 10 years ago, popped into something much bigger.

It’s now a full-blown business called Lush Popcorn.

“We started as a hobby for fun,” said Marcia Taylor. “I would make popcorn and take it to work, and my coworkers were like, ‘you should sell it!’”

The Taylors said they love to create unique flavors of popcorn. From buttery or spicy to salty and sweet. They even have CBD-infused popcorn.

When they moved to Milwaukee, they sold their creations at the Sherman Phoenix, an entrepreneurial hub and marketplace for a diverse array of makers.

They saved up and within five years, they’re now operating their own stand-alone storefront at 920 East Locust Street in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood.

“It’s just fun, for real,” said Marc Taylor. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else if I had the option.”

Marc Taylor joked that one of the best parts of work every day is getting on his sister’s nerves.

“You see how we just walked in the door, it’s like, ‘Hey,’ you know, catch up and have a good time,” said Marc Taylor. “We have meetings, but we’ve always been close anyways, so it’s not even like we’re working with each other. It’s just like I’m annoying my big sister but having fun at the same time.”

They said they trust each other and are committed to the growth of Lush Popcorn.

“I don’t think I could be in business with anyone else,” said Marcia Taylor. “We grew up together, so we know how to have fun. We work hard. We play hard, but I could never work with anyone else.”

In its new space, the business has expanded its offerings. The Taylors started selling homemade lemonades in all different flavors. They also are now able to add alcohol to drinks and offer a small food menu. They said it’s important for them to create a space for the community to gather, whether in the daytime or evening.

“Yeah, it’s just really a labor of love,” said Marcia.
