Since its opening in July 2022, Sherman Park Grocery has aimed to address food insecurity in the community.

“It’s always going to be a demand for groceries and unfortunately, the prices involved with that from our end as a business have just continued to increase,” said Marquisa Wince, owner of Sherman Park Grocery Store.

However, Wince explains that soaring supply prices have made this goal increasingly difficult to achieve.

“We came in at a season where prices were already really high,” said Wince. “You’re going to see it in the beef industry, you’re going to see it in the poultry industry. We’ve seen some stabilization with like eggs and dairy but nothing that brings the price level down.”

Wince said she has limited options for reducing prices and remaining in business.

“There’s only so much that we can do,” said Wince. “Like I said, being creative in the ways that we can balance and provide deals and just provide some subsidies for folks in the community. We do giveaways, we do markdowns to the extent that we can, and ultimately, we are a business that needs to get the supplies in order to be able to provide that demand to folks.”

She said she urges her suppliers to offer discounts, so that she can pass on the savings to her customers.

“Give us some price breaks, so that we can give those breaks to the folks here in the community,” said Wince. “The folks in Milwaukee have been shut out of the grocery industry. It’s not by happenstance we are the only full-service grocery store.”
