What You Need To Know

  • Having upset the Dallas Cowboys, the Green Bay Packers will next face the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers in California

  • The Packers and 49ers are not postseason strangers

  • Out of nine playoff meetings, the 49ers have won five and the Packers have won four. Now, it’s time for chapter 10

In the 1995 playoffs, Mike Holmgren’s Packers announced their arrival with a 27-17 upset of the defending Super Bowl Champion 49ers in San Francisco. It was a stunning achievement that laid the groundwork for the Packers’ Super Bowl victory a year later.

Indeed, in the 1996 playoffs, the 49ers were just a 35-14 stepping stone for the eventual champion Packers at Lambeau Field.

By the 1997 NFC Championship Game in San Francisco, Steve Mariucci had replaced George Seifert as 49ers Coach. The Packers played through the rain and mud, beating the 49ers 23-10 on the way to their second straight Super Bowl.

The 1998 playoff meeting marked the last game as Packers coach for Holmgren.

After an apparent (clear?) fumble by Jerry Rice was overlooked, Steve Young hit Terrell Owens for the winning touchdown — 30-27 49ers.

After the 2001 season, Mike Sherman’s Packers beat the 49ers 25-15 in the playoffs at Lambeau Field.

Then there was a long gap before the 49ers beat the Packers 45-31 in the 2012 playoffs. Colin Kaepernick ran wild for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

The next year, Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers came into Lambeau Field and upset the Packers 23-20.

The two most recent meetings in the playoffs between the Packers and 49ers featured the current coaches of Matt LaFleur and Kyle Shanahan (who worked together in Houston, Washington and Atlanta.)

Raheem Mostert and the 49ers prevailed 37-20 in the 2019 NFC Championship Game.

Two years later, the 49ers came into Lambeau Field and upset the Packers 13-10.

That’s nine playoff meetings. The 49ers won five. The Packers won four. Now, it’s chapter 10.
