MADISON, Wis. — In a compelling shift from medical practice to mentorship, Dr. Inga Hofmann, a respected pediatric hematologist and oncologist in Madison, has embarked on an effort to support her fellow faith-based physicians.
The academic doctor, having spent most of her career at UW Health, is now helping colleagues discover not just their professional futures but potentially their higher calling.
Acknowledging the emotional burden carried by physicians, Hofmann reflected on the weight of the work.
“There are things that we carry as physicians when we see so much that eventually gets stored in our bodies and our emotions and that we carry because we care so much,” she said.
Motivated by a desire to bring a deeper sense of purpose to her medical peers, Hofmann took a leap of faith. She returned to school, enrolling in a Bible college to explore the intersection of faith and medicine.
“What did the Bible say about healing? It was actually, for most of Jesus’s ministry, about healing and deliverance,” she said.
Recently, Hofmann began Heal the Healers, a faith-led mentorship program for physicians. She emphasized the importance of addressing the whole person — mentally, physically and spiritually.
“There’s a wonderful way we can help them in a deeper way,” she said.
In the past, Hofmann had already conducted trainings for other universities and physician mom groups. Her ambitious endeavor now also plans to go even further. Her organization will hold a national convention next November in Madison.
Reflecting on her journey, Hofmann said she was always a private person of prayer, but believes strongly now in her purpose and her effort.
“God is helping physicians heal and restore because He cares deeply about people and about medicine and patients,” she said.
