MILWAUKEE — Fairly or not, the 2023 Milwaukee Brewers season will probably not be remembered by most for the 92 regular season victories or the National League Central Division title.
Instead, losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Arizona Diamondbacks, with both games at home, will be foremost in the minds of most fans.
Wednesday night’s 5-2 loss brought the Brewers’ season to an end. The perspective of overachieving and beating adversity will fall on deaf ears. This was a disappointing end.
Everything seemed to turn Monday afternoon when Craig Counsell announced that Brandon Woodruff would miss the series with a shoulder injury. I’m not saying the outcome would have been different. It just changed the vibe from “this team has the pitching to go deep” to “this organization is cursed with playoff injuries through the years.”
That’s taking nothing away from the Diamondbacks. They came back from early deficits in both games. They came up with the big plays and big hits, unlike the Brewers.
Arizona’s bullpen was terrific. They deserved to advance.
Craig Counsell’s status is the immediate concern. The manager’s contract is up, by his choice. He’ll decide whether he wants to stay, take some time off to be with family, or manage somewhere else. I know some fans frustrated with postseason failures wouldn’t mind if he left. Be careful what you wish for.
Another Brewers season ends with a loss and a quiet locker room. The franchise and their fans have seen this sad movie before.
