MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin is receiving $58 million from the U.S. Department of Education to support charter schools in the state, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced Tuesday.

The five-year federal grant will help develop, expand and replicate up to 42 charter schools across the state for the Wisconsin Charter School Program (WCSP).

DPI said the funding will strengthen charter school authorization and promote more statewide collaborations.

The funding also allows up to 40 existing public charter school to complete activities started during the state’s previous grant.

Wisconsin had 239 public charter schools who enrolled close to 50,000 students in the 2022-23 school year, according to DPI.

DPI officials said they’ll have several sub-grant competitions available, which will be posted here.

It said those interested in receiving sub-grants will have until mid-February to apply. Sub-grant award announcements will tentatively take place in June 2024.
