RACINE, Wis. — One band getting ready to take the stage at Summerfest is bringing their own unique blend of music to the Big Gig.
Racine-based Rocky Rose is unique compared to many local bands. While others often play tribute songs made famous by other artists, Rocky Rose plays almost exclusively original music.
Singer-songwriter Rachelle Koshen said she takes inspiration from her everyday life to write songs for the band. Getting to share her creations with the public is an opportunity she said she truly appreciates.
“Because we are an all original band, we have to have a buy-in from the public. It isn’t like you hear a cover and you know it and you have memories associated with that. I like to let people know why I wrote this song,” said Koshen.
Rocky Rose formed about six years ago when Koshen and drummer Steve Comeau came together to bring something new to the Racine music scene. Their music transcends genres, with some songs having more of a rock sound and others having hints of country and bluegrass. It is a flexibility the group said they appreciate.
“We are not just stuck in one thing so when we say we play Americana music, it is just all the roots music, so it really appeals to a lot of generations,” said Koshen.
Steve Comeau, who also helps manage the band’s booking and business operations, said getting to play at Summerfest really opens them up to a new audience. Having it on their resume can also go a long way when booking future gigs.
While Comeau said playing all original music can sometimes make it harder to get booked, he thinks it is a major positive at Summerfest.
“At Summerfest, people are walking by and if you hear us, our music is really accessible. The melodies are great, she (Rachelle) is great, it just kind of sucks you in and everything,” said Comeau.
Rocky Rose will take the stage at Summerfest on Thursday, June 29 at 4:15 p.m. on the UScellular Connection Stage. To learn more about the band, you can visit their website.
