MILWAUKEE — If you’re planning to hit the road in the next few days for the long Memorial Day weekend, you definitely won’t be alone out there.

“It’s going to be the biggest post-pandemic travel weekend for sure,” said American Automobile Association Wisconsin’s Nick Jarmusz. “Not quite back up to those record highs we saw in 2019, but really knocking on the door there and in the big picture, really back to pre-pandemic levels.”

AAA Wisconsin anticipates that more than 800,000 Wisconsinites will travel at least 50 miles from home this coming weekend, and with that demand for gas likely to surge across the Midwest, it begs the question — should folks fill up now with prices averaging $3.54/gallon in Wisconsin or should they wait a few more days?

“Go ahead and fill up now,” Jarmusz said. “It’s unlikely that prices will significantly go down any further and we do think there’s a delayed uptick in demand this Spring, and [prices] will begin to increase again as we get closer to the holiday weekend.”

Jarmusz said gas prices around the state are 85 cents below where they were a year ago at this time.

“Compared to last Memorial Day, this is kind of a welcome relief heading into this year,” he said.
