MADISON, Wis. — Over 800,000 Wisconsinites are expected to travel 50 miles or more for Memorial Day weekend, according to the American Automobile Association.

That’s a record number, about 6.7% higher than in 2022.

Of the amount expected to travel, about 720,000 will drive and 42,000 will fly.

“Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff to what promises to be a very busy summer travel season,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA. “Despite various inflationary pressures, consumer spending is strong, and Americans still want to travel. Because of that, we’ve seen demand come roaring back, just shy of pre-pandemic levels in Wisconsin.”

Unlike Wisconsin, nationwide travel numbers are still slightly behind pre-pandemic level, according to AAA.

But compared to last year, Memorial Day road trips are up 6%. Air travel is expected to rise by 11% from last year.
