MILWAUKEE — The James Beard Foundation announced the finalists for its 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards on Wednesday, with four Wisconsin culinary contenders making the cut.

Finalists include chefs and restaurants from Milwaukee and Madison, Wis., with both cities getting two each. There were a total of six semifinalists from Wisconsin.

These are the Wisconsin contenders for the 2023 awards:

Best New Restaurant

  • Lupi & Iris in Milwaukee

Best Chef: Midwest

  • Gregory León of Amilinda in Milwaukee

  • Francesco Mangano of Osteria Papavero in Madison, Wis.

  • Itaru Nagano and Andrew Kroeger of Fairchild in Madison, Wis.

The winners will be celebrated at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on June 5 in Chicago.

Last year, Dane Baldwin, the chef and owner of The Diplomat in Milwaukee, was named the Best Chef in the Midwest.
