WISCONSIN — The James Beard Awards announced its 2023 semifinalists and Wisconsin has again made a strong presence among culinary contenders.
The James Beard Foundation on Wednesday announced the semifinalists for its annual Restaurant and Chef Awards and Wisconsin chefs and restaurants were named in six total categories.
These are the Wisconsin contenders for the 2023 awards:
Outstanding Restaurateur
- Amy and Jason Kerstein, Joe Muench and Dan Snider of Black Shoe Hospitality (Story Hill BKC and Buttermint Finer Dining & Cocktails) in Milwaukee
Outstanding Restaurant
- Wickman House in Ellison Bay, Wis.
Emerging Chef
- Jamie Hoang of Ahan in Madison, Wis.
Best New Restaurant
- Lupi & Iris in Milwaukee
Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker
- Andrew Hutchison of Madison Sourdough in Madison, Wis.
Best Chef: Midwest
- Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite of EsterEv in Milwaukee
- Gregory León of Amilinda in Milwaukee
- Francesco Mangano of Osteria Papavero in Madison, Wis.
- Itaru Nagano and Andrew Kroeger of Fairchild in Madison, Wis.
The finalists will be announced March 29, and winners will be celebrated at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on June 5 in Chicago.
Last year, Dane Baldwin, the chef and owner of The Diplomat in Milwaukee, was named the Best Chef in the Midwest.
