MADISON, Wis. — A line of storms tore through Wisconsin on Wednesday, causing destruction across the southeastern part of the state.

The recent severe weather might have left several people dealing with storm damage.

Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner Nathan Houdek shared tips and reminders for Wisconsinites who may have experienced any property damage from the storm.

“If yesterday’s storms caused damage to your house or car, it’s important to get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible,” Houdek said. “Take pictures of your damage and notify your insurance agent or company right away to begin the claim process.”

Experts at the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance recommend that consumers think about the following tips as they respond to storm damage:

  • Make a list of damaged items, including cracks in walls, missing shingles, damaged siding and anything else

  • Take photographs of the damages before cleaning up

  • Do not throw out any damaged property without the claim adjuster’s agreement

  • Keep all receipts that document the cost of the repairs or the replacement of damaged items

Houdek said that if Wisconsinites encounter issues with their insurance agent or company, they should contact the OCI to file a complaint. The OCI can be reached at 1-800-236-8517, or at its website.
