MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee police officer was shot near St. Paul and 21st streets, according to officials.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, a 26-year-old officer was responding to a welfare check. Upon his arrival, he woke someone who was slumped over in his car; that person then fled the scene.

The 22-year-old male suspect and the officer exchanged gun fire. Both were shot, according to police.

The suspect stole the officer’s squad car. He crashed not far from the scene. Another vehicle was involved in that crash, and that driver was taken to the hospital.

The suspect’s gun was recovered in the squad car.

Officials confirmed the suspect was arrested.

Officials said the officer is currently receiving medical care at a nearby hospital and is expected to recover, as is the suspect.

This is the third law enforcement officer to be shot in Milwaukee this month. Acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson said people need to “wake up” to gun violence issues in the community.

Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said this wellness check went horribly wrong. He praised his officers for serving the community despite the recent shootings.
