OCONOMOWOC, Wis. — At a local brewery, a table for 13 has been reserved for days.
Dave Baron, the co-founder of SteelTank Brewing Co., put out 13 beers as a tribute to the 13 U.S. troops who were killed in the attack at Kabul's airport on Thursday, Aug. 26.
Baron, a veteran himself who served in 1984, felt a personal connection to the fallen, and said he had to do something.
His son served in Afghanistan.
"I know exactly what those families felt," he said. "My son was involved in a few close calls, and when that happens it's heartwrenching... they shut all communication down between Afghanistan and stateside."
Baron remembers waiting for as many as four days to receive confirmation if his son was alive. He found himself answering 3 a.m. phone calls from Fort Bragg, North Carolina multiple times, often by himself in an effort to alleviate his wife's pain.
"You almost know what it feels like to lose a child," Baron said. "I feel for [the families]... This really, really hits home for me."
Baron recalled feeling expendable during his time in the military, and saw this as a way to acknowledge the human lives that were lost that day.
"When they [customers] walk by, I don't want them [the fallen veterans] to be forgotten about," he said.
In fact, Baron doesn't want anyone who's served the U.S. to be forgotten.
"I wanted my community here to know, if you're a veteran, you have a home. You can come here, enjoy yourself. We welcome you. We love you," he said.
SteelTank Brewing Co., which is lined with flags representing each military branch, offers discounted food and beer for veterans.
"There's an American, patriot-loving individual here, and if anybody ever needs to talk, I'll listen," Baron said.
He's hoping people will honor the fallen 13, and other veterans, for years to come, and never lose sight that they have rights thanks to the U.S. military.
"I want to see Americans pull back together again," Baron said.
Baron poured another fresh round of beers on Sunday morning.
