WISCONSIN— Rep. Bryan Steil told Spectrum News 1 on Friday that a Marine from Wisconsin was meters away from the suicide bombing outside of Kabul's airport.
Steil spoke with the Marine's father on the phone. The father, a Marine himself, served in Iraq and received a purple heart.
Steil's office confirmed the Marine was stationed at the Kabul airport to assist with evacuations. He was at the Abbey Gate on Thursday, which is where the explosion occurred.
He was knocked down but is otherwise uninjured. He was roughly 50 meters away from the bombing, Steil's office said.
On Friday morning, the Marine called his father early, and the southeastern Wisconsin family said received notification that their son was alive and uninjured at around 5:30 a.m. However, the family is holding off on speaking out directly, out of respect for families who are still be notified that their loved ones were killed in the attack, Steil's office said.
Steil also confirmed that the Wisconsin Marine is still at the Kabul airport, helping to get U.S. citizens out of Afghanistan. Steil's office said the troops helping with evacuations "are still under significant threat."
