MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Wisconsin’s largest airport is planning for what is on the horizon over the next 20 years.

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is currently in the process of developing its “Master Plan 2040”, which assesses facilities and runway configurations as the airport moves forward over the next two decades. Wednesday, Mitchell Airport Director Brian Dranzik addressed the Milwaukee County Transportation and Public Works Committee with an update to the plan.

While the master plan is still in the development phases, it calls for several scenarios where the airport could consolidate or reconfigure its runways, however those plans would not call for the airport to acquire more land.

The master plan was last addressed in 2008 during a time of rapid growth at the airport. In the 12 years since, passenger volume has slowed at the airport, however they still want to plan for growth.

“It requires us to think about the facilities we have now today and how they need to change and be adaptive and grow. I mean we are going to grow, we are looking at still a 1 to 3 % growth scenario over that time period. We do have aging facilities, so we really have to look at what our needs are over that period of time.” Says Brian Dranzik

The airport hopes to have the master plan completed by late 2020. It will need to be approved by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and then submitted to the FAA.
