OSHKOSH, Wis.— Whether it is in commercials or during major sporting events, there is a good chance you have seen the iconic Goodyear blimp on TV at some point in your life. However, at EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, visitors have the chance to see it up close as it flies around the grounds throughout the week.
Thursday, Spectrum News 1’s Ryan Burk had the opportunity to hop aboard the airship as it took to the skies over the show. The half-hour long flight provided a unique vantage point to take in the EAA grounds.
Blimp pilot Joe Erbs is one of the lucky few people in the world who get to command this one of a kind airship. Erbs is one of only 11 pilots for Goodyear.
“There are more active astronauts than active blimp pilots,” said Erbs as the blimp soared high above Oshkosh.
Having the chance to showcase the blimp at an iconic show like Airventure meant a lot for this Akron, Ohio-based pilot.
“Anytime there are so many aviation enthusiasts around and people who are genuinely interested and kinda have the right smart questions, it makes it really interesting for us,” said Erbs.
The Goodyear blimp will remain on the EAA grounds on Friday. To learn more about the Goodyear blimp, including its history, click here.
