ROLLING PRAIRIE, Ind.— George Oudhuis has been a Green Bay Packers fan since he was nine-years-old.

“In the 60s, they were always on TV,” Oudhuis said. "It was Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Max McGee, Fuzzy Thurston, Nitschke, you name ‘em all. I became good friends with Fuzzy Thurston in his later years.”

But, he’s never lived in Green Bay, or in Wisconsin at all.

“No, actually I’ve lived south of Rolling Prairie [Indiana] for a while, moved to Europe for a year or two, and then came back and settled in around Rolling Prairie,” Oudhuis said.

When someone says they eat, sleep, and breathe the Packers, Oudhuis should be the person who comes to mind.

His rec room is decked out in Packers gear. He even has a replica Lombardi trophy.

“Super Bowl XLV: This one is starting to get a little tarnished,” Oudhuis said. "I want a brand new one."

In a non-COVID-19 world, Oudhuis goes to three home games every year. His family vacation is always to Green Bay, and he makes several trips to the city throughout the year when he’s running low on much-needed items.

“The staples,” Oudhuis said. "You’ve got your brats, your beer, sometimes they’ve got green and gold tortilla chips up there.”

He said he wears Packers gear 24/7, 365 days a year, even for weddings and funerals.

“I’ve got dress shirts, polo shirts, undershirts, t-shirts, pajamas; I’m never out of Packers clothes,” Oudhuis said.

There might be other Packers fans who have the same, but there is one thing Oudhuis has that other Green Bay fans don’t, and that’s a key to the city.

He was named the "Unofficial Mayor of Green Bay" by the Packer Land Pride Magazine in 2013.

It all started a few years before that, at a hotel he was staying at.

“I would have a parking spot when we would go to games, and there was a sign out in front that said, 'Reserved Parking for Big George, Mayor of Green Bay,'” Oudhuis said. "People started seeing that, and the hotel heard about it, and so every time we would go to the hotel, a lady would make sure I had a chair down by the pool before the pool opened, a cup of coffee and my newspaper, and they treated me like I was some kind of mayor."

Oudhuis is one of ten finalists named for this year’s Green Bay Packers’ Fan Hall of Fame.

It’s his fourth time being nominated. He had a shot in 2013, 2014, and 2016.

“I just want to get my family name up there,” Oudhuis said. "That’s what means the most to me. To have my name associated with the Packer organization in any way, shape or form, it’s a dream.”

Only one finalist will be named to the Packers’ Fan Hall of Fame. You can vote here.
