CINCINNATI, Ohio— During these times where we’re being kept apart – people in one Ohio community are coming together to remember one of their own.

  • 33 year old Kaia Grant was killed in the line of duty during a pursuit
  • Officer Grant was an eight year veteran of the Springdale Police Department
  • The community and first responders from around the state came out to honor her during a procession and an honors ceremony

The community of Springdale came out to support their hero, Officer Kaia Grant. Many laying different tributes at the Springdale Police Department and hundreds lining the streets of Springdale as her procession passed by.

It was an emotional day for the town of Springdale as 33 year old Officer Kaia Grant was laid to rest. Officer Grant was killed last weekend during a pursuit. Officer Grant was described as being full of personality and a wonderful police officer by her police chief. Grant had been with the Springdale Police Department for eight years.

But as the news came in over the last week, the community rallied together, showcasing their support for Officer Grant.

“I grew up in Springdale and the unity has always been here," Cindy Witt a Springdale resident along the procession route said. "And I have to say they’re showing their support today.”

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Springdale for her procession which lasted more than 20 minutes and included police departments from all over the state of Ohio. And despite the new normal caused by the Coronavirus pandemic- many people gathered together at the police station- while doing their best to stay apart- in order to pay respects.

“In these days and times right now it’s nice to see people will actually come out and support these brothers taking care of each other," Mike Witt a Springdale resident along the procession route said. "We need to have their back too.”

One of just 33 sworn-in officers in the Springdale police department- Grant is the first in its history to die in the line of duty. That’s why so many other first responders across the area and region knew it was especially important to come together.

“We all work together as one," Samuel Daggett a firefighter with Blue and Deerfield Township said. "So we always have to show respect to each other because we each got each other’s back at the end of the day.”

It’s very evident  in this community that Officer Grant will not be forgotten but remembered for the sacrifices that she made protecting her community.
