Donations are critical for the relief efforts following a natural disaster, and the governor recommends taking part through regional chapters of national organizations, including the American Red CrossUnited Way and Salvation Army

Just last year, Attorney General Dave Yost filed a lawsuit against a fake charity claiming to be helping recovery efforts in East Palestine, Ohio, following a train derailment.

“Unfortunately, scams and fraudulent activity often present a very real threat following natural disasters; the current situation involving Hurricane Helene is likely no exception,” said Sherry Maxfield, Ohio Department of Commerce director in a news release. “Ohioans are generous individuals who want to make a difference, especially in times of crisis. That is why it is imperative that they take the necessary steps to protect themselves from scammers while also helping to ensure their money goes where they intend for it to go.”

Maxfield said it is important for residents to be aware of potential fraudsters attempting to exploit their goodwill.

Officials recommended several tips to be sure their donation is helping out the affected communities, including:

  • Donating to trusted charities with proven track records on handling disaster relief
  • Verifying an organization's reputation through online research
  • Using caution when donating to crowdfunding sites
  • Use credit cards instead of cash, gift cards or moneywiring such as Venmo or cryptocurrency
  • Verifying text donations by confirming the charity's number on its website

DeWine has already activated the Ohio National Guard, sending resources to North Carolina. Ohio Task Force 1 also moved into North Carolina after assisting in Florida following Hurricane Helene. A team from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport also headed down to Asheville Regional Airport to assist its airport team.
