CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Clinic now has a chief artificial intelligence officer in Dr. Ben Shahshahani, according to a press release, who “will work closely with other executives, clinical leaders and data scientists to drive Cleveland Clinic’s AI vision of transforming healthcare delivery.”
Shahshahani has more than 20 years experience with AI. He will officially start on Aug. 12, 2024. He will be creating a stategy for the network’s use of AI, looking at ways the technology can help while also considering safety and ethics.
“Cleveland Clinic sees great promise for artificial intelligence in health care, as it has the ability to improve care for patients and streamline work for caregivers,” said Chief Digital Officer Dr. Rohit Chandra in the release. “However, we need to be thoughtful about how we implement it. Ben has a track record of effectively and strategically applying new technologies to create beneficial change for organizations. We are excited to bring his expertise to Cleveland Clinic.”
Shahshahani had previously worked for SiriusXM and Pandora, where he also focused on machine learning and product analytics, according to the release. He also spent time at Verizon Media/Yahoo, Google, Nuance and IBM.
He went to Purdue University, where he earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering.
“I am looking forward to joining Cleveland Clinic and working collaboratively across teams to advance the understanding and use of artificial intelligence in healthcare in a way that benefits patients and caregivers,” Shahshahani said in the release.
