COLUMBUS, Ohio — An autopsy report from the Franklin County Coroner's Office on Tuesday stated Darnell Taylor, the 5-year-old boy who was at the center of an Amber Alert in February, died by "smothering."
The autopsy report said Darnell's neck had been crushed, and he then died after suffocating, stating his death was caused by "Asphyxia by smothering with cervical neck compression." The report also showed that Darnell's body had begun to show signs of decomposition, that he had alcohol in his system and that he had choked on what had been in his stomach at the time of his death.
As for the alcohol, the report didn't clarify whether it could have come from ingesting items such as alcohol itself or certain medications, such as cough syrup, or if it was part of the decomposition process.
Additionally, Darnell had bruises on parts of his face and ear, as well as bleeding in his eyes. There were also scars on his head and other extremities.
Darnell had been under the guardianship of Pammy Maye, who has been charged with murder in connection with his death. She's currently in Franklin County jail, awaiting her next trial, which is set for later this month.
On Feb. 14, Maye's husband reported Darnell missing around 3:03 a.m., stating Maye had woken him up and made statements leading him to believe Darnell was injured.
"My wife just killed our foster child," her husband said on the 911 call.
Maye then took off with Darnell after waking up her husband, according to police reports. Shortly after, an Amber Alert was issued for Darnell, and the search began for him and Maye, who left the area.
Police eventually located her in Cleveland, who led investigators to Darnell's body. Darnell was found two days after going missing in a storm drain on Marsdale Avenue, stuffed in a garbage bag.
