TOLEDO, Ohio — Healthcare provider ProMedica is abolishing more than $222 million in medical debt for 108,737 area patients by working with local governments, according to a press release from the office of State Rep. Michele Grim, D-Toledo.
“The abolishment of medical debt takes away a burden that too many in our community are struggling with day after day,” Grim said in the release. “No one should have to decide between making a payment to a debt collector for life saving medical care they needed or putting a meal on the table for their family. Abolishing medical debt alleviates families of these decisions. I’m thrilled to see ProMedica join other hospitals and local governments to bring needed relief to patients.”
The city of Toledo is purchasing more than $69 million worth of the debt and Lucas County will purchase more than $14 million, according to the release. Those whose medical debt is being abolished will be informed by letter.
The release cites Grim’s history of medical debt abolishment, such as her time on Toledo City Council when she, “led efforts to initially abolish medical debt for nearly 41K Lucas County residents, to a grand total of $240M in medical debt.”
It also notes her sponsorship regarding House Bill 174, which would establish the Ohio Health Care Plan, a universal healthcare for all Ohio residents.
