COLUMBUS, Ohio — The search for 5-year-old Darnell Taylor came to an end early Friday morning — nearly 48 hours following his disappearance that prompted a statewide Amber Alert — after investigators located his body.

Taylor's body was found just after 1 a.m. Friday. During a press conference Friday, Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said the boy's foster mother, Pammy Maye, had been taken into custody and would be charged with murder in his death.

Suspect leads police to body

Maye was taken into custody by Brooklyn Police late Thursday night after they received a report of a suspicious person near a business. Police responded to the 4000 block of Tiedeman Road at about 9:40 p.m., where Maye was found wandering in a nightgown. Police identified her as the suspect in Wednesday's Amber Alert and she was taken into custody. She was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Brooklyn, a suburb of Cleveland, is located about 120 miles from Columbus.

While speaking to investigators Thursday night, Maye reportedly gave information to police that Taylor's body might be located in a sewage drain in the 1000 block of Marsdale Avenue in Franklin County. It is unclear where the body was later found.

911 calls provide chilling account

The search for Taylor began early Wednesday after his foster father called police around 3:03 a.m., when Maye awoke him with statements leading him to believe Taylor had been injured.

"My wife just killed our foster child," her husband can be heard saying in a 911 call.

After waking her husband, Maye took Taylor in her 2015 Jeep Cherokee and drove off.

Police arrived at the home on Reeb Avenue at 3:08 a.m. and began searching the neighborhood for Maye and Taylor.

Officers responding to the scene are believed to have passed by Maye in the Jeep. The car did not have a front license plate, so police said they did not know it was Maye's vehicle.

Maye's vehicle was located in an apartment complex in Brooklyn, Ohio.

Police recovered the vehicle at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, two hours after the 911 calls occurred.

Bryant said Maye would be facing homicide charges in addition to kidnapping and child endangerment charges that had been filed Wednesday.
