OHIO — The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is introducing a new tool that it hopes will speed up service for some of its customers.

What You Need To Know

  • The kiosks allow drivers to renew their registrations and get tags the same day

  • Customers need to bring a driver's license

  • There are 29 Kiosk locations across Ohio, a number BMV officials hope to increase to 50 by the end of the year

There are new self-service kiosks being installed in stores around the state.

The process is streamlined and more convenient than renewing online, said Charlie Norman, Ohio’s registrar of motor vehicles.

“You can come in scan your license and do a number of transactions, most common of which is your vehicle registration renewal notice,” Norman said.

“You are waiting for your stickers in the mail when you order them online,” Norman said. “When you use the kiosk, you’re walking away with your registration card and your stickers in hand.”

All customers need to bring to the kiosk is their driver’s license.

“If you don’t have your license, you can put in a few other personal indicators like date of birth, social security number, that kind of thing, and it can find you that way but the easiest way is to just scan your license so you scan your license, click through the system and it can really take less than two minutes sometimes,” Norman said.

Using the kiosk costs the same price as going in person, and according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, over 275,000 Ohioans have saved a trip to the BMV by using a BMV Express kiosk.

“We’re always looking for more ways to provide convenience for our customers, we know Ohioans have diverse and unique needs and demands of their time so we want to provide as many services and give folks as many options as we can for how they interact with the BMV and how they interact with their government,” Norman said.

Right now, there are 29 Kiosk locations across Ohio. BMV officials hope to increase that to 50 by the end of the year.

Norman said the goal is to have the kiosks perform more convenient services that customers would typically have to do in-person at the BMV.
