CLEVELAND — A 2.3-magnitude earthquake shook Madison Township Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
USGS said the tremor was recorded around 8:45 a.m. and was just over four miles deep. USGS said the earthquake occurred near the Lake Couty and Ashtabula County line.
Earthquakes have been felt in Lake County over the last few years, according to the USGS. In January of 2022, USGS recorded a 2.8-magnitude earthquake and a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in June 2019.
USGS said Northeast Ohio had its first earthquake reported in 1823, and since then, they have been more frequent.
The highest magnitude earthquake recorded in Ohio since 1900 was near Kettlersville with a magnitude 5.4 quake in 1937, according to the USGS. The highest magnitude quake in northeast Ohio since 1900 was near Chardon with a a magnitude 5 in 1986. Though usually, these earthquakes tend to be too small to cause damage.
