TIMBERLAKE, Ohio — The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 2.8 earthquake shook areas of Lake County Tuesday morning.

The earthquake was centered 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) northwest of Timberlake in Lake County, the USGS reported. The USGS said it received more than 200 reports of shaking, most from an area between Euclid and Mentor. 

There were no reports of damage. 

Since 1900, the USGS has reported 212 earthquakes have been recorded in Ohio, although some of those quakes were centered in Lake Erie or surrounding states. The last previous earthquake centered in Ohio was Dec. 12, 2021 when a magnitude 3 quake was centered near Manchester, Ohio. 

In 2021, six earthquakes were felt recorded in Ohio, according to USGS data. 

The highest magnitude earthquake recorded in Ohio since 1900 was a magnitude 5.4 quake near Kettlersville in 1937, according to the USGS. The highest magnitude quake in northeast Ohio since 1900 was a magnitude 5 near Chardon in 1986.
