SUMMIT COUNTY — Summit County’s annual “Clear the Shelter!” adoption event will run throughout the month of August, offering reduced adoption fees for dogs and cats.

Since 2015, the national Clear the Shelters! initiative, NBCUniversal Local’s pet adoption and donation campaign, has placed more than 860,000 pets in new homes, with last year’s effort setting a new single-year record, counting more than 161,000 adoptions, the group said.

In Summit County, from Tuesday, Aug. 1 through Thursday, Aug. 31, dogs can be adopted for $28 (regularly $94) and cats can be adopted for $5 (regularly $60), the county said.

All pets will be spayed or neutered and micro-chipped, and fully vetted, including vaccinations, bloodwork, flea treatments and de-worming, the county said.

Adopters also will receive a 2023 Summit County Dog License as part of the adoption fee.

Many of the animals available at the shelter can be viewed on the Summit County Animal Control Facebook page.

Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro said the county is proud of the campaign and the staff of the Summit County Animal Shelter, as well as area residents.

“We are proud that year after year, hundreds of dogs and cats get new homes and we look forward to great participation this year,” Shapiro said.
