AKRON, Ohio — Akron residents who wish to share anonymous tips with the Akron Police Department or view alerts and other information can now do it all through an app.

The Akron Police Department wants to create a cooperative environment with the community to help prevent crime, enforce laws and reduce Akronites’ fear, said Police Chief Stephen Mylett.

“We believe our new Akron PD app from tip411 will help us do just that by making it easier for our community to connect with us to make Akron a safer place for all to live, work, and visit,” Mylett said.

Created by software developer tip411, the Akron PD app can be downloaded free from the Google Play Store, iTunes App Store, or on the Akron Police Department website.

Officials ensure the Akron PD app system is 100% anonymous, as the tip411 technology removes all identifying data before the police receive the communication, according to tip411.

The app is designed to give the public greater access to alerts, social media channels and other info to help fight crime, said tip411 President Terry Halsch.

“We’re continuously working to build more advanced and innovative products to help departments better engage their communities,” Halsch said.

Those without a smart phone can send Akron Police anonymous tips by texting AKRONPD along with a message to 847411 (tip411).

Tips also can be submitted anonymously using the tip411 messaging feature on the police department website.
