AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Zoo has rolled out a new feature designed for visitors old enough to drive.

Five electric scooters made to look like animals are now available to rent for those 18 and older, the zoo said in a release.

The “ScooterPals Fur-Wheelers” are full size, seated, four-wheel scooters available through a timed rental.

They’re big enough to accommodate a large adult, or an adult with a child at least 36 inches tall, the zoo said.

Visitors can choose from a menagerie of plush beasts to zip around a portion of the zoo’s 77 acres, including:

  • Ponce the lion;
  • Reya the giraffe;
  • Sarge the rhinoceros;
  • Nyx the leopard; or
  • Kozēe the black bear.

The scooters are available to rent at the lemur building in the Legends of the Wild area, near the main entrance. They cost $5 for the rental, plus 35 cents per minute.

Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Akron Zoo works to keep animals from extinction and currently participates in 46 species' survival programs, from the Golden lion tamarin to the Mauritius pink pigeon.
