GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — For Katrinka Morgan, creating art is a passion.
When her brother died, she used that passion to come up with a way to help her loved ones.

“I wanted to give my nephew, my great-nephew and his grandson a memory of his grandpa. I know how to make teddy bears,” she said. “I've made teddy bears since I was probably about 12 years old and it just came naturally.”
Morgan started making memory gifts and eventually launched a business called Cherished Memories in Fabric.
“Everybody's different and remembers differently, and to see their faces when they see them is really special. And it's just it's a way to remember people,” she said.
The type of gifts Morgan makes ranges from a pillow to a bear. The whole process starts with deconstructing the item.
“I don't have to, but this is the way I do it. I take it the dress completely apart. So I will take the sleeves apart and iron it so that it's flat and one single flat piece of fabric. Many times, I'll take a picture of what the dress looks like or the shirt, and then use that as a basis for how I'm going to make the bear going forward.”
She said the process of making each item is detailed and full of love.
“Everything that I make is different and it's more what the fabric tells me to do in terms of its shape and its fabric content,” she said. “So it just a matter of sitting down with it and then figuring out what it would make into the best.”
A few years ago, Laurel Howes purchased three pillows from Morgan for Christmas gifts. Her father-in-law died and she wanted a gift to honor his life.
“When I saw what she did it was beyond perfect, beyond perfect. But even better yet was Christmas morning,” she said. “And to watch my husband and my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law open these gifts and my mother-in-law literally opened it and she hugged it, which of course, everybody sobbed.”
She said the pillows brought joy to her family and she is thankful to have a part of him with her forever.
“This just means so much. He was my father-in-law, but he was also the grandfather to my, my children,” she said. “And for me, I never had a grandfather that I knew and I never had a good father figure. So he filled both of those places in my heart, too. So, for me, it is exceptionally special also, and to be able to give that gift was just one of my favorite, favorite gifts of all time.”
Morgan said she believes she has made more than 20 memorable gifts this holiday season.
