DAYTON, Ohio — People are getting into the holiday spirit and getting all their decorations ready for Christmas, but this time, many residents are paying someone else to do it.

What You Need To Know

  • In the offseason, workers like landscapers or exterior power washers are getting business putting up Christmas lights

  • One worker said his business tripled this year with more people wanting to get out of the chore of getting on the roof to put up lights

  • Now he said he'll have to start putting up lights earlier next year

“The bigger the house, the longer it takes,” said Chris Rodgers, owner of Elite Exterior cleaning. “It’s a lot more than I expected."

He's been busy running his power washing business for houses in Dayton.

“They definitely want the houses done,” said Rodgers.

But when it gets too cold, he found another way to bring in business.

He’s going house to house putting up Christmas lights.

“Christmas time is the favorite time of year for me, and I love Christmas anyways," said Rodgers. "But I mean some of the roofs can get pretty crazy."

It's part of the reason people are paying him to do it. He started his house lights operation last year, and he said this year, the trend is catching on.

“First year trying to get going, getting out there that we do it, it was kinda slow. I think we did like a handful. This year it’s just tripled,” said Rodgers.

He said they will still be busy taking down the lights after the holidays, but because of that increased demand, he said next year, he’ll be out on rooftops even sooner.

“Next year, I’ll probably start at the end of October,” said Rodgers. “I know it sounds funny trying to put up Christmas lights in October, but you gotta do what you gotta do."
