WESTERVILLE, Ohio — A central Ohio family is drawing BMX enthusiasts.

Chad Buehrer is a father of three and the track operator at Westerville BMX.

“I’ve got three kids. My oldest daughter is 14, then I’ve got a 12-year-old daughter, and then my son is 9 and all three of them race now,” he said.

Buehrer’s son Landon has become quite the competitor. Landon says his bike is lighter than most and designed with speed in mind.

“It’s an Orca so it's carbon. The frame is carbon and the handlebars and part of the wheels,” he said.

The right gear, including clothing, on the BMX track is important because Landon says falling is inevitable. His sister Hailey agrees.

“I got a concussion once and I broke both my wrists at another race,” she said.

Despite the injuries, Hailey always finds herself returning to the track.

“I like being able to hang out with all the people on our team and it’s just fun,” she said.

Landon says he enjoys the competing aspect the most.

“I like competing and it’s just fun to play with my friends and do it too,” he said.

The Buehrer family has traveled all over the country participating in races and Chad Buehrer says in addition to the quality time with his kids, it’s great to see them enjoying time outdoors.

“It’s just something where we get to get outside and get away from the electronics, which is always good,” he said.

Chad Buehrer says the best way to get involved is through the BMX racing league. It offers a six-week program specifically for beginners. For more information, you can visit USABMX.com.
