OHIO — Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 when nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. Despite being hundreds of miles away from the World Trade Center, where the majority of the deaths occured, pieces of the tower and other artifacts from Sept. 11 are displayed throughout Ohio. 

 

Here is a look at a few of the sites that honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 

Akron area

  • Stow’s 9/11 Memorial Garden features a beam from the towers, The memorial is located at Stow City Hall, 3760 Darrow Road. A memorial will be held at the memorial garden Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
  • The 9/11 Memorial in Alliance has aluminum debris from the Twin Towers. The 1,120-pound, 20-foot memorial design was done by students in the art department at the University of Mount Union. The memorial was dedicated in 2014.

Cincinnati area

  • A 12-foot long piece of structural steel from one of the World Trade Center Twin Towers.is displayed at the Green Township Administrative Complex. The memorial has been in place since 2011. At the site of the Green Township, a remembrance will be held Saturday morning at 9, which tentatively will include an Air Force flyover. 
  • Warren County 9/11 Memorial has a piece of an I-beam from the towers and is located at the Warren County Government Center, 822 Memorial Drive, Lebanon. A pair of events will be held at the memorial. A candle-light vigil is scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m. A remembrance will occur Saturday at 8:45 a.m.

Cleveland area

  • A 9/11 memorial garden is located in front of the Painesville fire station, 28 Mentor Ave. and features a steel beam from Ground Zero.
  • Brook Park’s 9/11 memorial at Kennedy Park, located at 17487 Sylvia Drive, features images of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers cut from a granite tile recovered from those buildings. 
  • Parma Heights Police and Firefighters 9/11 Memorial features a steel beam from the towers. It is located in front of the fire department, 6184 Pearl Road. The memorial was dedicated in 2013.
  • The Shoppes at Parma has an I-beam that was recovered from Ground Zero from the World Trade Center site.
  • Two upright beams from the World Trade Center are displayed outside of Lakewood Fire Station 1. It's located at 14601 Madison Ave. in Lakewood.

Columbus area

  • First Responders Park in Hilliard features steel pieces from the Twin Towers which were escorted to Ohio by police officers and firefighters. An annual memorial is held at the park. It’s located at 5337 Center St., Hilliard. 

Dayton area

  • The 9/11 memorial at the National Center for Medical Readiness in Fairborn features a “steel artifact” from the tower. It is located at 506 E. Xenia Drive in Fairborn.
  • The Beavercreek 9/11 Memorial displays a 6,000-pound piece of the North Tower. The beam extended from floors 101-105. The memorial is located at 1153 N. Fairfield Road.

Toledo area

  • The 9/11 memorial at the Ohio Air National Guard Base in Toledo features steel beams from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon and soil from the Flight 93 site.

Youngstown area

  • The Austintown 9/11 Memorial Park features beams from the world trade center, stones from the Pentagon and an urn of dirt from the Pennsylvania crash site.“It’s located at 1055 S. Raccoon Road.
